The general standard is a fall of roughly six inches over the first ten feet away from the foundation. Plenty of older properties are flat at the house, or pitched the wrong way entirely.
Often it is a major part of it. Surface water pooling against the foundation is one of the most common causes. If water is entering from below the surface or through a failing drain tile, grading alone will not be enough — which is why we assess the property before quoting instead of selling you one fix.
Grading redirects water on the surface. Drainage moves water that is already sitting or coming from below. Plenty of properties need both. We tell you which after looking at the site.
Grading disturbs the surface by definition. We restore graded areas with sod or seed as part of the job, and we keep the working area limited to what actually needs correcting.
Any time the ground is not frozen or saturated. Spring and fall are best, mostly because of the sod or seed restoration afterward.
