There are two ways to get a new lawn. Sod gives you finished turf the day it goes down and is ready for light use in about two weeks. Seed costs less and gives you a wider grass selection, but it takes a full season to fill in and needs consistent watering to establish.
Either way, the result depends almost entirely on what happens before the grass goes down. We strip the old turf, correct the grade so water runs away from the house, till and amend the soil, and roll the surface flat. Skipping that step is the reason most new lawns fail.

Sod if you want a finished lawn immediately, you have a slope or erosion to stabilize, or you are selling the house. Seed if you are working to a tighter budget, have a large area to cover, or want a specific grass blend. Sod costs more up front; seed costs more in patience and watering.
Late summer through early fall is the best window in our climate — warm soil, cooler air, and fall rain. Spring is the second-best option. Sod can go down any time the ground is not frozen, but seed put down in mid-summer usually struggles.
Keep foot traffic off for about two weeks while it roots, light use after that, and normal use after about a month. Hold off on mowing until it is rooted enough that a gentle tug does not lift it.
New sod needs water daily, sometimes twice daily in heat, for the first two weeks, then tapered off as it roots. Seed needs the top layer kept consistently damp until germination. We leave a written schedule — underwatering during establishment is the single most common reason a new lawn fails.
Yes. Patch sodding and overseeding with core aeration are both common fixes for sections lost to drought, grubs, pet damage, or utility work.
Yes. Once the lawn is established, a regular fertilization and weed control program protects the investment. Most of our sod and seed customers move onto a program the following season.
