Turf is a higher up-front cost than sod. It is priced per square foot, with the product and the amount of site prep as the main variables. Most people weigh it against years of watering, mowing, and reseeding. We quote it per project after seeing the area.
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people install it. Solid waste is picked up as normal and liquid drains through the base. We use pet-rated infill that does not trap odor, and an occasional rinse keeps it clean.
Synthetic turf runs warmer than natural grass in direct sun. In shaded areas the difference is minor. If the area is in full sun and gets used barefoot, a quick rinse cools it down, and there are cooler-running infill options — ask about them when we quote the job.
It handles Chicago winters fine. Snow melts and drains through the base. Let snow melt on its own where you can; if you need to clear it, use a plastic shovel and skip the rock salt.
Quality turf over a properly built base typically lasts well over a decade. The base work determines the lifespan more than the turf product does.
