Doing it right means more than dumping bark on top of last year’s layer. We clean the beds out, pull weeds at the root, cut a fresh edge, and install mulch at the correct depth — usually two to three inches. Too thin and weeds come through; too deep and it holds water against stems and starves roots of air.
Most customers have this done once a year in spring, with a mid-season touch-up on the front beds. We also offer scheduled bed maintenance through the season to keep the weeds down.

One cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at three inches deep. We measure your beds and include the material in the quote, so you do not have to work it out yourself.
Once a year for most properties, usually in spring, since mulch breaks down and thins out over the season. If your existing layer is still two inches or more, you may only need a light top-dress rather than a full install.
Usually not. Mulch breaks down into the soil and that is a benefit. But if the existing layer is already three inches or more, or it has gone matted and water is running off it instead of soaking in, it should be broken up or partly removed before adding more.
Shredded hardwood is the standard around here — it knits together, stays put on slopes, and breaks down into the soil. Dyed mulch holds its color longer. Stone is permanent but does not feed the soil and radiates heat back at the plants.
Mid to late spring, after the soil warms up and the spring cleanup is done. Fall installation also works and gives the beds some winter protection.
